Dr. Oz and the Weight Loss Supplement Scam

Health expert and daytime talk show host, Dr. Oz, recently revealed the newest revolution in the weight loss industry, Garcinia Cambogia. Garcinia Cambogia is a nutrient rich fruit that grows in the Indonesian tropic. Scientists have discovered how to extract specific components to create a powerful fat burning herbal supplement. When extracted down to its purest form it can burn up to two to three times more fat than just diet and exercise alone! Garcinia not only burns fat but it also helps your body block new fat from forming.

In addition to all of its impressive fat burning benefits, it also suppresses your appetite by increasing serotonin levels in your brain. This is especially effective for those of us who let our emotions control our appetite. Increased serotonin levels improve our mood and sleeping patterns, both of which are extremely influential on our eating habits.

The Dr. Oz show is great for bringing publicity to new and exciting weight loss supplements. Unfortunately, online scammers see it as an opportunity to make a quick buck. Garcinia is no exception; according to foodsecurity.org the Internet is polluted with fake ineffective brands, and Garcinia Cambogia is just another example of a false advertised product that consumers buy into.

Here at Tucson Medical Weight Loss we carry our own Garcinia supplement called EndoTrim. Unlike many scams you will find online, EndoTrim contains pure Garcinia, providing the most effective weight loss results.

EndoTrim is a comprehensive endocrine and metabolic balancing formula designed to promote optimal body composition by favorably modulating the hormones insulin, leptin, and cortisol, balancing blood sugar, optimizing the lipoprotein lipase enzyme, and limiting cravings.

EndoTrim may be used for: appetite control, blood sugar support, fat loss, improving metabolism, improving muscle mass and stress control.

Sugar: The Sweetest Drug by Dr. Emershad

Research done at Connecticut College showed that Oreo cookies activated more pleasure receptors in the brains of rats than did morphine and cocaine. Does that make sugar a drug? In many respects it is. Over consuming sugar leads to toxicity, specifically diabetes. International data collection shows that the more sugar a country consumes, the greater the incidence of diabetes. If the sugar is in the form of soda, the incidence increases eleven-fold. Sugar can be addicting in the classic sense of craving-bingeing-withdrawal as anyone who has raided a trick-or-treat bag can tell you. Chronic consumption of sugar is a habit that is very hard to break and meets many of the psychological criteria for addiction. Some of these criteria are things like craving or a strong desire to use and use despite negative consequences. This addictive potential causes the average American adult to consume between 150-180 pounds of sugar a year and is responsible for the obesity epidemic. 80% of the 600,000 items sold in supermarkets contain added sugar. Checking the food label for added sugar is complicated by the fact that it can be listed by 56 different names including maltodextran, rice syrup, panocha, fruit juice, and dextran among many others.

What can be done? Following simple guidelines can substantially reduce sugar intake:
1. Do not consume sugar-laden beverages such as soda, sports drinks, juices, and sweet teas.
2. Limit your consumption of processed foods. Cooking and eating cleaner reduces sugar intake and helps with weight loss.
3. Lower sugar in home cooking by using vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, mint, cardamom, and ginger instead of sugar. In many recipes sugar can be lowered by 1/2-1/3 without significantly affecting taste.
4. Our taste buds are super-sensitized to sweet and want it all the time. To reset your taste buds, eat more pungent and bitter foods such as dark green veggies, strong cheeses, seasonings such as rosemary, basil, turmeric, cumin, cranberries, blackberries, and green apples.
5. A good goal to aim for is 25 grams of sugar or less per day.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric Bypass Surgery at Red Mountain Med Spa

If you are considering gastric bypass surgery for weight loss, you should be sure you understand the long term consequences and success rates for patients who have had gastric bypass surgery.  The surgery involves bypassing the majority of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. Because of this, gastric bypass patients require lifetime supplementation with vitamin B-12, calcium, and iron. Failure to take these supplements every day results in life-threatening consequences or a minimum of osteoporosis.
Weight gain does occur after gastric bypass surgery and some patients regain all the weight they lost. All patients lose some weight in the first year. Starting with year two, weight gain can begin. By year five a significant number of patients have regained weight and at year ten, even more are struggling.
When reporting the success rates for gastric bypass surgery, many studies classify success as maintaining a BMI of 35 or less. A BMI of 35 translates to a 5 ’4″ woman weighing 205 lbs. This is still classified as obesity and is not the result most patients are seeking.
Research done following bypass surgery reveals that the decrease in hormones that cause hunger lasts for a year on average. These hormones then return to pre-surgery levels and this is one of the factors leading to weight gain. Surgeons are also not trained to deal with the psycho-social factors important in obesity, so surgical patients may not get the long term support that they need.
The Bariatric Physicians and the staff at Red Mountain Med Spa have received special training in the medical and psycho-social treatment of obesity. They are available to assist patients on a regular basis. It is important to focus on every aspect of the weight loss process including food choices, exercise, and emotional eating. It is also critical for the patient to feel comfortable coming to the office when they are doing well and when they are struggling. Surgeons can often be judgmental about a patient’s weight gain. At Red Mountain, we are able to help surgical patients who have regained weight get back on track, and our successful programs have enabled patients to avoid having gastric bypass surgery to begin with.

Bon Appetite

Bon Appetite

Dr. Suzanne Bentz

Dr. Suzanne Bentz

While vacationing in Paris this summer, I was completely intrigued by what has been called the “French Paradox.” Simply stated, this is the absurd reality that French people seem to enjoy many rich, high calorie foods, but yet they do not have the high rates of Obesity that we have in the United States.

Paris is lined with stylish cafés filled with people enjoying typical French cuisine, which of all things includes French Bread and Pomme Frittes, or as we call them, French Fries! Almost every one of their entrées is covered in rich sauces, and who can pass on the tray of elegant and delectable French pastries. To top it all off, there is the French tradition of ending the meal with an assortment of rich, mellow cheeses. Did I mention the wonderful French wine served with lunch and dinner?

I wanted to cry out how unfair this was, as French people must have a secret “anti-fat weapon,” but then my more reasonable self began to make some observations. First of all, with the exception of one McDonalds, I did not see any other fast food restaurant. There were no Circle Ks or Quick Trips selling gallon sized sodas, big grab bags of chips, and giant sized candy bars. And when the French drink coffee, they sit in a café and enjoy a small cup of espresso or Café Au Lait. I did not see anyone with a Venti-sized Starbucks with caramel and whipped cream!

French people enjoy the “art” of dining. They savor their meals, instead of rushing through them. Portions are much smaller than the super-sized portions that many Americans have come to expect. French people also do not seem to be obsessed with fitness routines or working out; however, they walk more often to their workplace and to other destinations.

I am truly proud to be an American, but I want to encourage my fellow citizens to take a few food “cues” from the French. Simply stated, we should try to slow down, enjoy our meals, and bring portion sizes in reason. We should limit fast food and convenience foods to a minimum, leave the car parked, and put on those Skechers Shape-Ups and go for a walk. With just a few changes we can reverse America’s current trend towards obesity and lead healthier, more enjoyable lives.
